The EU is experiencing perhaps its most difficult period since its foundation. External pressure is significant, and internal constraints and quarrels cannot be overlooked, with East European EU members playing a special role. Despite these problems, the EU remains the only supranational association of states, and—however uncertainly—a normative power with integrated policy fields. Can it survive the current challenges?
