European Studies Certificate
The European Institute offers a Certificate in European Studies in conjunction with graduate-degree programs in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the School of International and Public Affairs, and other schools at Columbia. The certificate recognizes substantial work on Europe within a student’s graduate studies.
Students must be enrolled in a Columbia graduate program to pursue the certificate; it is not a stand-alone program. Students in all disciplines are welcome to apply. Because of the number of courses required, the certificate usually is not suitable for MA students.
Course Requirements
Students must complete 7 graduate-level courses (21 credits), distributed as follows:
- Three courses (9 credits) in the candidate’s chosen discipline
- Four courses (12 credits) in at least two additional disciplines
- Two of the courses (6 credits) must be seminars or colloquia
All courses must be approved by the EI Program Director. Graduate-level courses in any Columbia department or school may qualify. Courses not specifically on Europe may qualify with a final project on a European topic. (An example is Sociology G4220, Comparative Capitalisms.) Independent research courses may qualify. Language Requirements
- Advanced proficiency in one European language
- Reading proficiency in a second language, which can be non-European, that is appropriate to the student’s program of study
Essay Requirement
A Certificate essay of 30-50 pages in length. The essay must be sponsored by a EI faculty affiliate and be an original piece of research, interpretation, or analysis.
